Throw me to the wolves
They’re already circling
The chance has gone
Falling like sand
Through my lifeless hands
Tinted sunsets
Cold mornings
Asphalt
Desperate conversations
Who said things happen for a reason?
Things happen ‘cos you fucking make them
The most beautiful of things
That four letter word.
Notes on the Movember story.

I really wanted to write a short news article, because I am appauling at them and I thought it would be good practice to try and do one for Navigator. I find it very hard to try and fit information into as little as a few hundred words and still make it a half decent article. Not entirely sure what to think of it.
Had a few hiccups in the bar as well. My SLR decided to have a lens fault so I had to use my mobile phone, so excuse the dodgy images.
I moustache, is that real?

On Saturday night EightBar in Falmouth held a Dirty Bikers party in aid of men’s health charity Movember.
The international event, which specifically highlights prostate cancer, encourages participants to grow a moustache throughout the month of November. The event has seen huge international success and is now in its fourth year.
“It’s something that you don’t normally hear a lot about, but I think that it is important and it’s a lot of fun to raise money in this way,” said Steve Pacey, a student at Plymouth University, who came armed with a good few weeks of facial hair.
Over £30 million has been raised for their partner The Prostate Cancer Charity throughout the four years Movember has been active. “Going forward, Movember will continue to work towards helping to change established habits and attitudes and make men aware of the risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment,” says the Movember website.
The Dirty Bikers party was held in classy cocktail lounge EightBar where biker fancy dress saw the venue turn into a scene resembling a ‘70s Village People concert.

Bar staff Dave, Seb and Andrew rock their mos.
Illustration student Christopher Jones said: “This is such a fantastic way to raise awareness about cancer in men. The dangers need to be highlighted more and the support this event is gaining is really good.”
Music was supplied by Sir Vinyl of the Fattest, a dance music DJ group from Penzance. The tunes were pumping out as the ladies donned fake paper moustaches handed out by the bar so they didn’t feel too left out.
Contributions were given all night long by ‘Mo Bros’, and their ‘Mo Sistas’ towards Movember and the final amount is expected to be confirmed soon.

Reason is keeping its distance from me
All that I am, flag to the enemy
All that I can, here comes uncertainty
All those late nights smiling reluctantly
If I could screw all these words up into one verse
It would hurt so fucking good
For me
Background noise, absence of colour
This is where I long to be
How I got the photos for the Cancer Bats review.
Posted by Ben Sullivan in Falmouth Navigator on November 18, 2009
I didn’t want to take my SLR to the gig. Firstly, it’s too big and I wouldn’t be able to enjoy the gig properly. Secondly, I didn’t have access to the press pit so I would get far superior photos using a real photographers images.
To get the images I contacted the photographer, Frank Gane, through facebook and asked if it was okay.
Here are the emails:

Hi Frank, I’m just writing an article about Cancer Bats (I’m a Journalism student) and was wondering if I could have permission to use a few of your photos from the pavilions for it. You’d be fully acredited to the images.
Regards,
Ben

Cancer Bats bio
Posted by Ben Sullivan in Uncategorized on November 17, 2009
Cancer Bats are a Canadian hardcore punk band formed in 2004 by lead singer Liam Cormier and guitarist Scott Middleton. Their music is desribed as hardcore punk, but with influences from southern metal as well. Cancer Bats have released two albums to date, and the third is due for release in 2010. The band, who are signed to Distort Entertainment, are good friends with fellow Canadians Alexisonfire and both bands include guest appearences by the other in many songs.
Cancer Bats gig review

As Liam Cormier waltzed onto the stage in front of a hungry crowd, I felt a tingle dance up my spine. It was caused by ground-shaking vibrations from the opening riff to Hail Destroyer, the first song to the band’s sophomore album with the same name. When screams, drums and bass kicked in I knew that this would be another unforgettable night where Cancer Bats would not dissapoint.
The Canadian hardcore giants returned to Cornwall only a few months after playing in Newquay with Fucked Up, and the crowd definately displayed their appreciation. Cancer Bats’ amazing blend of hardcore punk and southern metal makes their chugging, juggernaut riffs and Liam’s unmistakable throaty growl a must hear.

The Pavilions exploded into a mosh fest, as Cormier declared: “It’s time to party!”
The Toronto based boys powered through their hour long set with an unfathomable amount of energy and passion. Scott Middleton’s groovy, harmonic-laden guitar work with a powerhorse of a rhythm section drove the band, leaving not one dull track in the set. Some new songs were even thrown in there from the band’s third album, which is currently still being written. This provoked the crowd into an excited frenzy.
Cancer Bats have worked hard to be where they are, and they make it clear they’re grateful to the fans, even if we were only a few hundred in a small town compared to the thousands at international festivals and grand stadiums. Many of the songs were dedicated to the crowd, and although being high up behind a barrier, the gig was comfortably intimate. Liam’s relentless headbanging and showmanship made us feel as if we were up there with them. Forgetting about our worries, drinking up, and just having a damn good time.

After having finished their set, the buzzing crowd were not just going to stand there and accept that that was the end of the night. Hundreds of stomps to the shout of ‘CANCER BATS’ shuddered the wooden flooring. One by one Liam, Scott, Mike and Jaye returned to the stage. “Has anyone ever heard of a band called the Beastie Boys!?” said Liam in his trademark Canadian drool. The crowd roared with delight, and the infamous Beastie Boys song ‘Sabotage’ was destroyed and improved with the encore.
But it was not just Cancer Bats that night which made the gig one of my Falmouth’s favourites. The three support bands were perfectly selected to give the punters their moneys-worth in hardcore, loud, punk. The first two bands on were Falmouth’s own offspring. Bangers warmed up the crowd with catchy sing-along punk prowess, proving why they’ve been such a hit nationwide. Crocus followed, leaving the crowd in awe at loud, emotional thrashy punk. Crocus are one of my favourite live acts, with raw energy and feeling streaming from all four members.
Exeter’s finest The Computers were main support, and proved why they are rising throughout the country to such popularity. Screaming punk presented in a rock and roll fashion makes this act stand out from the rest. An ecletic set culminating in lead singer/guitarist Alex bringing his mic and guitar down to the crowd to play their final song of the set.

At the end of the night, the audience was left electric with what was an amazing night for hardcore punk, and a legendary gig at the Princess Pavilions. Let’s hope it’s not too long before the terminally-ill bloodsuckers are back in town riding their hurricane of thunder and lightning.
Sweet Innocence, Long Life Tragedy…
Posted by Ben Sullivan in Personal on November 13, 2009
I walk through the darkest rooms
Full of gloom and minds like mazes
And rejoice ’cause I’ll be the voice
Of your failure fucking generation
Still don’t belong to anyone
This is a life of hesitation
And we’d all trade one night to remember
For the years we’ve carelessly wasted
Big dreams and half full drinks
A few pills in your guts
So now it’s easy to think or breathe
And true love was just a marketed ploy
So guys can hit their lines
And girls can grab their boys
Sweet innocence with loser’s luck
I know you think you’re giving love
But you’re just getting fucked
Guess what?
I looked and you know what I found?
That you can’t expect to trust this world
When you can’t even trust yourself
And your head starts to spin
As you dance to the beat
Because tomorrow isn’t promised
But it’s sure as fuck is coming
And your body starts to shake
As you sing in the streets
Because it’s cold outside
So you better start running
Don’t count on me to save your life
When I’ve never had
A clear enough perspective on mine
And I know things change
we’ll go our separate ways
And alive is the only thing
It seems we’ve stayed lately
And the truth isn’t always easy to believe
You walk alone to the sound of your own heartbeat
And I know it’s not always so easy to see
But we are still all so fucking beautiful to me

Ruiner Headline Show
Posted by Ben Sullivan in Personal on November 6, 2009

On December 5th On the Rocks in Newquay will be host to one of the best local gigs of the year. We have American hardcore punk giants Ruiner playing a headline show as part of their European tour, with support from 4 more awesome hardcore/punk bands.
Ruiner: Signed to Bridge 9 records, Ruiner are sailing off the back of the amazing ‘Hell is Empty’ record released in September. These guys will blow your face off and make this a night never to forget.
Unrestrained: Oregon hardcore rockers Unrestrained give Ruiner the perfect support with rolling shout along hardcore which will melt your face.
Crocus: Local punk favourites, Crocus give one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Constant touring of UK and Europe have paid off for these guys and they’re definitely one to watch.
The River Card: Touring buddies with Unrestrained, the River Card are making their mark in UK punk with serious airplay on Rafdio 1 punk show and supporting Uk giants such as Dead Swans and US favourites the Carrier.
Downtown Riots: Local female-fronted hardcore punk back with a new lineup and new material. Gaining support slots for acts such as Gallows, the Blackout and now Ruiner, DTR are hoping to smash their way into the scene starting off with this gig.
